What is barge-in?
The caller's ability to interrupt the voice agent while it is speaking, and have it stop and listen.
Barge-in, explained
People interrupt all the time on calls. Without barge-in, callers must wait for the agent to finish, which feels robotic.
Good barge-in stops the agent's audio quickly once the caller starts talking, and ignores background noise or brief sounds like "hmm".
