What is AI voice agent?
Software that holds a spoken phone conversation with a person, understands what they say and takes action, such as booking an appointment or taking an order.
AI voice agent, explained
An AI voice agent listens with speech-to-text, decides what to say and do with a large language model, and replies with text-to-speech, all within a second or two so the conversation feels natural.
Unlike an IVR, the caller doesn't press keys or follow a menu. They talk normally, interrupt, change their mind, and the agent keeps up. Good voice agents also act on the call: they check availability, write to a CRM or send a payment link.
